Correlating Aid and Trade – Prospects for Bulgaria’s Participation in Development Policy

Scope of activities The main objective of the project is to draw recommendations on the strategic priorities which Bulgaria has to set for the country’s participation in International Development and Cooperation and especially for granting development aid. To achieve this objective the project will:

·         summarise economic theory insights and concepts regarding development assistance, focusing on the motivation and potential economic benefits for donor-countries;

·         assess the existence, direction and strength of a relation between the dynamics of Official development assistance and international trade between EU countries that are also members of DAC and least developed countries from Sub-Saharan Africa;

·         analyse Bulgaria’s national strategy and obligations related to the county’s participation in International Development and Cooperation and especially in the EU Development policy to identify the potential benefits.

Opportunities and Perspectives in Bulgarian Trade Relations with Sub-Saharan African Countries

Scope of activities The study analyses the trade relations of Bulgaria with the countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Subject of the study are the real participation and attitudes of Bulgarian business as well as the dynamics, commodity structure and direction of trade with these countries.

The aim of the project is to identify the potential benefits and possible priority actions in the field of trade cooperation on the part of both Bulgarian companies and the government to redevelop trade relations with Sub-Saharan Africa in the context of the EU’s policy towards the region. In addition, the study aims to identify opportunities and support the state in formulating policies and instruments to achieve trade expansion on these markets. To achieve the goals, three main tasks are formulated within which the project activities are carried out.

• To examine and evaluate the attitudes of Bulgarian business towards the opportunities and real trade relations between Bulgaria and Sub-Saharan African countries.

• To analyse the dynamics, commodity structure and direction of trade with Sub-Saharan African countries in order to draw the comparative advantages of Bulgarian production on specific markets in Africa.

• To increase the awareness of Bulgarian companies, institutions and the academic community about the state of art, the trends and the potential opportunities and prospects for Bulgarian trade relations with Sub-Saharan African countries.

The main outcomes of the project are:

• A short introduction introduces the Sub-Saharan Africa region.

• The first part summarises the institutional structure of Bulgarian trade relations with Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular the new framework of the EU’s trade relations with the.

• The second part presents the results of the analysis of the trade relations of Bulgaria with the Sub-Saharan countries, including: a study of the dynamics of trade; a comparative analysis with the EU and other Central and Eastern European countries; a detailed research of the commodity and geographic structure of trade for the 2003-2015 period.

• The third part discusses a synthesised profile of Bulgarian companies trading with Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as of those who are interested in the region.

• The fourth part describes the results of systematic interviews to study the attitudes of Bulgarian companies trading in Sub-Saharan Africa.

• The last, concluding part summarises the most important analytical results of the survey, and presents some recommendations regarding the possibilities for improvement of the policy towards the region by the Bulgarian companies as well as by the government.

 
International Trade Relations between the EU and African Regional Economic Communities

Scope of activities The study assesses the overall economic situation of regional economic communities in Africa and presents the trends in their trade and economic relations and the challenges to their development

An assessment of the potential and real effects of the Economic partnership agreements on trade relations between the EU and African regions is made, as well as on the regional integration processes on the continent.

The project summarises the trends in trade and economic relations between the EU and African Economic partnership agreements regions outlining the prospects for their development are outlined.

The study assesses the dynamics, direction and commodity structure of Bulgaria’s international trade relations with the countries and Economic partnership agreements regions in Africa.

Some recommendations are made on the possible priority actions in the field of trade and economic cooperation through which to rebuild relationships between Bulgaria and the countries in Africa.

Regionalization and European Integration in Bulgaria and Romania – a Comparative Study

Scope of activities Responsible for “Comparative study of the regions in Bulgaria and Romania.” Written part of the joint study entitled “RCI of Bulgarian and Romanian Regions: Regional Competitiveness Benchmarking”, in which the methodological frame of the Regional Competitiveness Index is applied to Bulgarian and Romanian NUTS 2 regions. The results achieved show the relative ranking of the two countries and their regions in the EU and allow for a broad comparison between them as well as for conclusions to be drawn about their strengths and weaknesses regarding the overall regional development and all 11 fields covered by the RCI.
